Coronavirus Family Update - January 31

Coronavirus Family Update - January 31

Updated: February 4 at 3:10 p.m.

We want to share information we received this afternoon from the King County Department of Health regarding the coronavirus, the new virus that is spreading in China.

At this time, the immediate risk to the general public in Washington and the United States continues to be low.

However, guidance for schools has changed since last week. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all travelers from China (including school students, staff and volunteers) arriving in the U.S. AFTER February 2 at 2:00 p.m. stay at home away from others and monitor their health for 14 days. This measure was put in place because of the increasing number of cases of 2019-nCoV in China.

All travelers from China arriving BEFORE February 2 can continue to attend school and should take the following steps:

  • Watch for any changes in your health for 14 days after leaving China.
  • If you get a fever or develop a cough or difficulty breathing during this 14-day period, avoid contact with others. Call your doctor or healthcare provider to tell them about your symptoms and your recent travel.

Please remember the risk of the coronavirus is not at all connected with race, ethnicity or nationality. All of us must be careful not to draw conclusions about who might be exposed.  Sharing accurate information during a time of heightened concern is critical. One of the ways we can protect our community from illness is to keep rumors and misinformation from spreading.

Please check our website for updates, as guidance to schools may change.

As always, we encourage staff and students to stay home when sick. Please review Highline Health Service's guidelines for staying home when sick

You can find more detailed information about conronavirus on the Washington State Department of Health website.
